13 weeks agoI can`t hear schitt so I always respond with "YUP". No need for anybody to repeat to me - at 76 - was probably not something worth hearing anyway.

13 weeks agoMaybe you forget that I shoot and blow things up for a living. Hearing for me is something that has suffered in the line of duty.
That said, I was talking about speaking louder to folks who didn`t speak English in an effort to get them to understand, not to people who couldn`t hear.
13 weeks agoYou know I got hearing aids at the VA last year and about the only time I wear them is when I watch tv, that is so I can hear it without turning the volume so loud that you can hear it all over the house. I tried wearing them everyday for a while, but they were amplifying some of the sounds that I can hear well to the point that it was hurting my ears. I thought these hearing aids were specially made for me and the kind of hearing loss that I have, but it seems to me that is they missed the mark when they made these. I just have to shut them off or take them out of my ears when I am in mixed crowds because some people talk so loud the hurt in my ears is too bad to put up with. And some sounds hurt my ears also , like a feedback or just way over magnifying what I am hearing to the point of hurting my ears. When my wife gets iced out of the door on the fridge in then next room it hurts my ears it is so loud going into the cup or glass. It is even worse when it is one of those double walled stainless steel mugs. So as a result I do not wear my hearing aids that much.
13 weeks agoI`m not quite to the point that I need them, but some situations I either can`t hear or can`t understand what folks are saying. Too close to too many explosions and shooting without hearing protection. Or in the case of the M82/107 Barrett just not enough hearing protection.

Wow, for sure, EOD has some specific circumstances that it appears has caused him to have some hearing difficultly. For many others, it is pretty much an (age related) problem. Our mail box typically has an AD for hearing aids or such just about once a week or so. That`s because we live in an area where most all residents are 65 yrs old or greater.
Somehow, although I grew up with a significant near sight problem, my hearing ability was always excellent and I believe while maybe somewhat less now, I can still hear very well.
At work, many years ago, I could hear my boss and his boss chatting in his office about 15-20 feet away (office door open)..........I got every word they said while I went about my admin. duties out on the office floor.

Some of my hearing loss is self inflicted. Hearing protection for shooting wasn`t even a consideration when I was younger. Motorcycles, dirtbikes and snowmobiles were always modified and louder than necessary, but that`s just what we do!
Going under running aircraft to pin, safe or remove hung ordnance was another situation where extra hearing protection should`ve been used but we were always in a hurry and blew it off. Youth and exuberance always wins out over common sense I guess!
13 weeks agoI have shot guns, ran lawn mowers and chain saws, weedeaters, and other motorized small equipment without hearing protection. I have attended many auto races , without hearing protection.
But I had hearing problems early on in life also, so not all of my loss came from all the things that get blamed for hearing loss. I think I have been tone deaf all my life ,especially on some high pitched sounds. And in some circumstances I think I have developed selective hearing LOL!. and with age my hearing has steadily gotten worse too.
13 weeks agoI have selective hearing without a doubt! Mostly in the range of women`s voices!LOL
